KOREY MARTIN b. 1989, Tennessee
Korey Martin is an artist living with his wife and two cats in a little town in southwest Michigan. He draws portraits and landscapes with pencils on paper. He enjoys drawing familiar things in a humorous way, often utilizing repetition and variation, expectation vs. reality.
Korey is not sure why he draws or why he draws what he does. The mystery of his compulsion compels him to not only draw, but be more truly a part of the world which motivates him to do so.
In this regard, Korey is fascinated by the ways one can feel simultaneously part and apart from the world from which all things are made and emerge. By offering a loose grip on the reality which he depicts, drawing becomes his way to explore that tension with curiousity and lightness.
Like a reflection on a deep, dark lake, he sees drawing as similarly ordinary yet symbolically powerful, echoing the world while being part of it. For this reason, he thinks of his drawings as nothing new, but more of what already is.
